WalkAlyth - Balhary & Jordanstone walk

2 hours

A walk from and back to Alyth Square through two ancient estates. Route is along minor roads and grassy/muddy estate tracks, which can be icy in winter.

From Alyth Square walk towards the Alyth Traditional Fish Bar and walk along the length of Airlie Street as far as the war memorial. Cross the grassy area behind the memorial heading for the far corner where a muddy track leads to the A926, Blairgowrie road. Cross the road with care and take the track opposite which passes the Marshalls farm shop. Keep on this track till you reach the lodge house for Balhary estate. Go through the black iron gate and along the wooded track which in Spring is lined with daffodils, and where you might encounter a red squirrel.

Pass some ruined cottages and an ancient mill. Do not enter either building as the structures are unsafe. Balhary Walled Garden is part of the Scotland Open Garden Scheme. Meet the Alyth to Meigle road and cross over with care and take the track opposite which heads towards Jordanstone estate. At a crossroads go straight over onto the track with fruit polytunnels on your left.

Where the walled garden forms the right side of the track and has a green door set into the wall, turn left down a narrow track through the trees. Where this track meets another track turn left. This leads to a path along the side of what was the railway line from Alyth to Meigle.

The track emerges on the A928 Kirriemuir road. Cross over with care. Turn left and after a few metres pick up a track opposite which descends and is an extension of the path alongside the old railway line.

Where the path meets the B954 cross over with care and take the track leading to the Greenkeepers Store. Cross the golf course along the right of way and cross the Alyth Burn on the golfers footbridge. Turn left and follow the path along the right side of the Alyth Burn. Keep on this side of the Alyth Burn and pick up the road past the Burnside Nursery leading back to Alyth Square.
